Outside the Cross

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

Last week I produced yet another order for Cross cookies. They’re always the same, possibly because that’s all anyone’s ever seen. We do, however, have an order next month for Cross cookies with baseball stitching.

Sometimes I get SO bored making the same cookies over and over again. Especially a cross. They’re always pastel, always have a white, sugared border, and always a horizontal inscription.

As I was icing the pink crosses, I got to thinking…why not a Chanel cross, or a Lily Pulitzer cross, or Spiderman, or Irish knit?? Those particular designs came to me because I was working on orders with either those designs or colors. Dave cut some cross cookies for me to play around with and this is what I came up with:

Spanish inspired Cross Cookie

A more complex design. The base is pale pink with red vines and flowers with dark navy centers.

Chanel inspired Cross with ivory camelia.

Another complex design. This could be done in any color, I just happened to have black and ivory icing on hand. Black IS the signature Chanel color.

Since we’re in the midst of St. Patrick’s Day production, how about an Aran Irish Knit Cross…I don’t think an inscription would work on this, but you could definitely add a paper topper.

Spiderman!

Spiderman!

We were already making Spiderman rounds, so why not a cross? What little boy wouldn’t want that for his 1st communion party?

Preppy, simple designs

These three are the simpler designs.

I really love this one. I think the colors are perfect, but it would be just as pretty for a boy if you did it with shades of blue and the green palm frond.

Three Dots Cross

This one is just fun!

Dots and stripes cross

Love the inscription on the diagonal, and the simple tiny stripes and dots!

My plan is to have Cross cookies on hand and to extend the colors and designs of the day onto Cross cookies. Just to give people ideas outside of pastels and whites for Crosses.
