I’m not so sure that this will be at all interesting to the ladies out there, but I know two sweaty men that will be pleased as punch that I’m writing about digging ditches.
Are you confused? Have I lost my mind writing about such manly topics, when I clearly have an aversion to all things masculine? Like car cookies, motorcycle cookies, anything plumbing related, or say, ditch digging? I’ve only just this Summer managed to keep my plants alive and I don’t think gardening is as manly as plumbing, but it’s as manly as I want to be.
My Dad was up from Cape Cod a couple of weeks ago and one of the dirty jobs he and Dave worked on was getting electricity out to our sign. So in the Winter when the sun goes down at 4pm we can light up the sign and keep the shop open until 6pm. Exciting right??
That’s my Dad and the ditch, which was loaded with big rocks and evidently was super difficult to work with. (see all my new shrubs?? Hopefully, they’ll grow to be big full bushes…bushes. hehe)
Unfortunately, we had our driveway worked on BEFORE the ditch was dug, but the guys did a really good job raking the “sure pack” over the ditch and you can’t even see it. FYI, they used a tool called a “ditch wich”? They didn’t dig that skinny ditch with teaspoons. But it looks like they may have doesn’t it??
I guess I’ll have to take a picture at night when the light is on. When we get a light.
Feel like eating a nice dinner now??
It’s been a while since I’ve had three burners going at once!
I love this meal. I didn’t follow the recipe exactly, but here is the original.
Start with a nice, fresh salmon fillet (preferably wild caught). I sprinkled some salt, pepper and cumin on the fish and pan roasted it in my cast iron skillet.
I sauteed some garlic and onions, then threw in a pint of cherry tomatoes, which I forgot to halve. I also forgot half the other ingredients for the vinaigrette, but it tasted delicious just the same. (check the recipe link for the proper list of ingredients)
I found a bunch of ingredients in the fridge to toss with the quinoa; local goat cheese, fresh basil, fresh garlic, sherry vinegar, and capers.
Add all that to some quinoa, and…..
you have a tasty, fresh and healthy dinner. It all comes together super quick too, so it’s not as hard as you might think. (if you think it looks hard..)

Are handy dads not the best? When I lived in group houses (in my single boho days) my dad would no sooner than get off his plane before asking where the nearest hardware store was. He would fix everything on a list my roommates and I had compiled over the year.
Even though I never want to use one, I love the fact that there is a device called a Ditch Witch.

Can’t wait to see the new sign, in the dark, of course! That’s exciting! By the way, how do you know when salmon is done? We like salmon, just don’t cook it b/c I don’t know and the thought of eating it not done makes me sick.

EW. Get rid of my previous comment because it read as funny as it sounded in my head!!! (I’m alone at work and bored and it’s showing)

Congrats on getting the ditch done! How exciting to have light for the sign! This winter you can send your dad some electric light bulb cookies.
The shrubs look great. A good start on your garden.
I just got back in from mowing the yard. Ours needs a good rain. It’s been way too hot. ~~Rhonda
