An order for our Chanel collection came in a couple of weeks ago and since we’re working on adding/changing/tweaking every collection, Dave wanted me to add some new elements to our old Chanel collection.

My original set can be seen here in a post from July, 2010

Originally, the Chanel collection was just 4 cookies: The classic flap handbag, the classic double C ballet flats, Chanel No 5 bottle, and the camellia.

This time I added the pink and black suit, complete with chains and pearls.

And the striped, boat neck tee.

I couldn’t decide whether I liked the tee with pearls and chains or without, although, in the end I opted to go without.

Do you have a favorite version of the Tee?

I do still have a few ideas for some new designs for this set, but those will have to wait for the next order.  I’ve got to work on some big custom orders this week, including Abby Cadabby.

At least she’s pink…

Happy Bastille Day!

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Yep, today is Bastille Day! But I’ll be writing about cakes today….

This was somewhat of a last minute order from our famous Godzilla cake client!

Well, it really wasn’t that last minute, but I had to learn those buttercream roses quickly to get this cake done.

The cake is a triple layer PINK cake with mint green Swiss meringue buttercream.  The client wanted a cake for his wife that was pink on the inside and mint green on the outside, and very simple.

I LOVE simple!

I didn’t really have a tried and true pink cake recipe so I went with a basic white cake layer recipe from Tish Boyles, The Cake Book.

The cake turned out delicious. I know because I tasted the trimmings. Yum!

THIS cake order truly was last minute,  the client ordered it the day before!! But I really wanted to make it, and he was willing to go along with my idea of a Neapolitan cake.

Image from Wikipedia

I had strawberry puree on hand, so we baked a strawberry layer, a yellow cake layer and a chocolate cake layer (we ALWAYS have yellow and chocolate cake ingredients on hand!)

I also had strawberry and vanilla bean buttercream on hand, we only had to make the chocolate buttercream.

My only wish is that I could have taken a picture of it sliced, but I doubt the client would have paid for a cut up cake. The only course of action is to make one for myself!

Along with the inscription, I added a few pink and white sprinkles around the edge of the cake. Pretty cute. IMO.

Now don’t run around saying “Let Them Eat Cake” today. It is Bastille Day and you never know who’s got the guillotine!!

I Learn Something New Every Day

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Like I learned about a video game called Portal.

Honestly, I didn’t learn much about it beyond it’s existence and that it’s super popular.

I also learned that whatever that cubey thing is, it’s very complex to make into a cookie.

See?? All that outlining, AND it’s FIVE shades of gray! Holy color mixing.

You may have guessed that I’m not too into video games, unless it’s Bejeweled. I like that, possibly a little too much. And if your my friend on Facebook, you know that I used to spend a TON of time playing Bejeweled.

But, I don’t like Bejeweled or any other video game enough to actually BUY it. Please, I’d rather spend my money on pastel sanding sugar, or pretty cupcake wrappers.

Or maybe video game COOKIES!

Seriously, if you are into the video games, I’m not judging. Honestly, I’m not.  We’ve all got our weaknesses.

I thought this would be the more difficult cookie, but it wasn’t too bad. Plus, it wasn’t like I was making a hundred of them.

Even though I’m not a big video game chick, I thought these were fun cookies. More interesting than some of the cookies we make. And if they ever offer Portal for free somewhere, I might check it out!!!

July Cupcakes!!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Ugh, I just can’t stop being late in posting the flavors. We’ve had them in the shop for two weeks already, and they’ll only be available for another two weeks. So if you want to try any, you’d better get to the Bake Shoppe, pronto!

I guess I can figure out why I’m so late in posting them. You wanna know why? Because I was too busy MAKING them to sit down at the computer and write about them. And it’s not just the actual writing, it’s the photographing, editing, watermarking and THEN writing. Jeeesh, it takes so long these days.

Surely you don’t want to hear any more of my b*tching about how long things take, so let’s get on with the good stuff!!

I have to say, I had an epiphany in February, when everyone was making iced sugar cookies in the image of chocolate dipped strawberries. How about a “Chocolate Dipped Strawberry” cupcake???

So this is what I came up with: strawberry cake, with strawberry buttercream, dipped in chocolate ganache. Genius I say!! And customers are saying so too, we’ve sold out every day!

Coconut Almond

Coconut almond cakes with almond Swiss meringue buttercream, and a sprinkle of coconut.

Chocolate Malted

Chocolate malted cake with malted milk buttercream and a malted milk ball.

This one is divine. The cake is light, not too sweet and slightly crumbly, but so soft and such a wonderful contrast to the sweet, malted milk buttercream.

S’more

This one was so good last month, we decided to keep it on. Besides, it’s July, the peak of Summer and the peak of S’more season!!

Graham cake dipped in chocolate ganache with toasted marshmallow buttercream and piece of Hershey’s chocolate.

It’s tough to choose a favorite this month. I’d like to eat one of each every day, but I don’t think that would work out very well…

All these flavors are available through July 30th, and the Bake Shoppe has new-ish hours:

Weds-Sat 12p-6p

Of course you can call ahead to make sure we have your favorite reserved for you!

Bastille Day: The Perfect Opportunity to Eat Dessert!!

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Bastille Day is this week, and you know (if you’ve read this blog beyond this post) I love me ANYTHING French!!

So what a perfect time to create some fun cookies!!

A lot of cities have Bastille Day celebrations, unfortunately, Mount Holly, VT does not. At least not that I’m aware of.

Until now that is. Dave and I are planning a little party for some friends and I plan to make tons of sweets. There will be cake, palmiers, cookies, macaron, petit fours, tarte aux fraises, and whatever else I can think of!! We’ll drink French 75′s and eat some assorted Tartine.

Ce sera merveilleux!!

I found a super fun vintage poster with these little sayings on it. Do you know what it means??

Liberty, Equality, and Brotherhood. The national motto of France.  I don’t know what could be better!

Perhaps a box of Bastille Day cookies??

My CanCan dancers have a ton of make up on. (have I mentioned how terrible I am at RI faces??) But I love their skirts, and their legs and feet. So I can live with them!

I redesigned my Eiffel Tower to match the cartoon-y feel of this collection. I think I see a re-design of our Bonjour Paris collection in the near future!.

I don’t think we will have fireworks here in Mount Holly, but I know they will have them in France.

I may have to find myself a shirt just like this, and a red beret for Saturday night.

Everything except the shirt and beret on one tray. I must say, I’m quite smitten with my new collection (maybe a little less smitten with cancan girls face).

Ok, so maybe I don’t mind it THAT much. She certainly IS cartoon-y.

They are available RIGHT NOW!! Don’t wait, supplies are very limited and time is of the essence.

Bastille Day is July 14th!!

One last look at the whole set, shall we?

I’ll do my best to get some pictures of our Bastille Day fete, but I can’t make any promises. Who knows what I’ll be able to do after a few French 75′s??

More Athletic Cookies!

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Just before Father’s Day, we re-vamped our Golf and Play Ball collections. I think they are a lot fresher and a bit more special.

Here’s what we did with Golf:

We decided to keep the golf bags, but added pom pom club covers.

The green and sand trap are new to us. Dave made a random shaped cutter an I filled in a green and sand trap. Then iced the flag and the tiny golf ball. We got rid of our old 18th hole flag design.

We hadn’t ever designed a golf cart and figured we really should have one in this collection.

I added some stitching to the shoes, added golf tees (which we never did before and I think they still need a little work)

My favorite addition to the collection is the argyle vest and polo shirt. I had been thinking about argyle for some time as I LOVE argyle socks!

Overall, we’re pretty happy with the end result. I do have another idea for the next time, you’ll just have to wait and see!

Now for baseball, we didn’t really add all that much, but we made a few changes to our designs.

More detail on the jersey
More stitching on the glove
A smaller baseball with more stitching
And a whole new cookie: a baseball bat

I’ve still got one more cookie to add to this collection, but again, you’ll have to wait…

Father’s Day is long gone, but baseball and golf still have a long season ahead and these collections will be around for a few more months…

Making Sports More Fun!

Friday, July 8th, 2011

We’ve produced a whole lot of sports jerseys around here in the past few months. And since I’m not a sports fan, as I’ve made ABUNDANTLY clear before, I think cookies make sports fun for even the least enthusiastic fan.

Like me.

So, here are some highlights:

Celtics jersey with a basketball.

*Note* large jersey as the backdrop cookie and small basketball as the coordinating smaller cookie.

Finished with a coordinated and customized paper topper

We make this jersey ALL the time. I rarely post pictures because they are so common in our shop.

These were a custom order from a long time ago. Personalized with “Cheek”. I hope that’s someone’s name!!

Lots and lots of Cheeks.

I’m still working out the watermark, going forward it will be more transparent so you can see the cookies better.

Not quite a jersey, but a customized baseball with lots and lots of stitching.

Boston Bruins jerseys as part of our Bruins collection.

I think that about covers all the jerseys, but I’m sure we’ll have more to make soon!

*****We now have a new Facebook Fan Page, so go over and “like” it!!*****

Pot Luck and a Shipping Nightmare

Friday, July 8th, 2011

I don’t know why, but I’m not a real big fan of “pot luck” anything, but today I have such a crazy mix of cookies. None of them really go together, and I don’t really have enough to say about each one to make a separate post for each.

So here is a Pot Luck of cookies.

These were for a gender neutral baby shower. I copied the giraffe from a clipart image (with few minor changes to be more “cookie friendly”)

I have no idea why they wanted me to write Oh, Baby. But it’s cute nonetheless.

These were for a bake shoppe client.

I was worried that he might look a little bit mean or menacing, but no one was afraid of the cookies.

Dave made these all by himself, from start to finish.

I think they were for a bridal shower, or a rehearsal dinner, or maybe a wedding. Yikes, they are from so long ago, I don’t even remember, but they’re pretty cute!

We just made these last week. A replica of the Birthday Boys boat and his favorite beverage.

And now I’d like to take a moment to thank the US Postal Service for ROYALLY screwing up this order.

100 flamingo cookies for a dessert buffet at a wedding on Saturday night.

The client placed the order a little bit too close to the date of the event, only giving us 5 business days to produce and ship 100 cookies from Vermont to Missouri.  We like 14 business days: A. so we can work you into our production schedule  B.So the client doesn’t have to pay for express shipping, and C. so we can avoid the following kinds of debacles.

Anyway,  we really wanted to work with this client so we squished the job into our production schedule, and the cookies were ready to go on Thursday. Dave paid for an overnight shipping label from the US Postal Services website (which indicated that the package was guaranteed be delivered on Friday). He brought the package to the post office and sent it off.

On Friday, the package had not been delivered. After many calls to the US Postal Service (and the client), the worst case scenario was determined to be a Saturday delivery. A little bit close, but live-able.

Then came Saturday, the package was still in VT according to the tracking info on the USPS website.  Well, the package did not even arrive on Saturday, so the dessert table was without flamingo cookies.

Thanks again US Postal Service. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

From now on we’ll be sticking to UPS for overnight deliveries, which costs an arm and a leg, but saves everyone the headache of an overnight package taking THREE days to be delivered!

Work/Play

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

We created these a while ago and I never discussed their inception.

Dave and I are trying to keep ahead of the curve with new cookie designs, so we are going to be changing all of our collections on an ongoing basis.

New collections will come, some will go, so if you ever see something you want, you better just go on ahead and order it, because it may not last long.

We wanted to create a “Corporate Dad” collection for Father’s Day, so Dave sketched a whole ton of different elements. The wingtip shoes made the cut, I decided to make the collection with different suits, one brown with a gold tie and matching brown wingtip shoes. The other, a very Presidential navy blue suit with the ubiquitous red tie, and  black wingtips.

Finishing off the set we added one each of a dark gray and a brown fedora hat (just like Don Draper….or my Grandpa!!)

Most corporate Dad’s read the paper, carry a briefcase, wear a watch and have a glass of scotch at the end of the day, so those went in too.

Then when the Corporate Dude is off for the weekend, he comes up to Vermont for cupcakes and Fly Fishing!!

We made fly fishing cookies last year, but this time around I changed up my fish designs and we added the waders. Next year we’ll be adding a few more designs.

Our Fly Fishing collection is still available HERE, but the Businessman cookies are all gone until next year!!

Keep your eye out for more new collections!!

She Sells Sea Shells By The Sea Shore

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Does that make everyone else think of Cindy Brady? Poor little lisping Cindy Brady.

Anyway, we recently finished a couple of orders of Starfish and Seashell cookies.

Mint green and turquoise blue.

Sugared starfish.

Scallop shell. I still need to work out the line details here.

These got a coordinating paper topper. Designed by Dave and me.

Another order for chartreuse and white starfish. I really liked the color of this one.

That’s all for today, check back soon for more new and exciting designs…

And look up that Brady Bunch episode. It’s a classic.
